Finding your soulmate: is it possible?
Finding your soulmate is often considered the ultimate pitstop on the road to lasting happiness. However, the road can be long and winding, often leading to those difficult questions such as ‘Does this special person really exist?’ ‘Who are they?’ and ‘Where are they hiding?’ Below are some key pointers for understanding what drives human beings to tirelessly seek their soulmates, and how to know when you’ve met yours.
What is a soulmate?
The origin of the idea is partially derived from Plato’s philosophical tale ‘Symposium’. In the story, one of the characters, Aristophanes, states that originally, humans were perfect and completely androgynous beings made up of four arms, four legs and one head with two faces, forming a sphere. Out of pride and ambition, humankind wished to become equals of the Gods. But Jupiter (or Zeus, depending on which side of the Adriatic you’re on), fearing their power, cleaved them in two, thereby creating man and woman, condemning each human to spend their lives searching for their other half. The Ancients certainly had a knack for blending romance with spectacular violence.
This story was presented as an explanation of the love we feel for one another, and our insatiable desire to find the ideal person: we want to find the missing piece of ourselves in order to reach our old, perfect form. According to Plato, "The name ‘love’ is given to the desire and pursuit of this ancient state."
The soul, therefore, is not your double, nor is it your mirror, but the person who completes you. Once you are together, you can’t ever be parted. At least, that’s what the ancient Greeks believed. Today, of course, the dictionary details a soulmate as ‘a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner.’

Does your soulmate really exist?
With Plato’s theory in mind, it seems that a soulmate can be considered to be, in essence, the one person who corresponds to you the most. People seeking their soulmate believe that for everyone an ideal match exists somewhere; their missing half. However, finding your soulmate will only be successful if the love is reciprocal. Soulmates come in pairs; like Yin and Yang, they are inseparable.
It’s certainly a lovely notion, although for many people it’s difficult to believe in its existence, especially if one has already experienced disappointments in love, or has never experienced it at all. However, a soulmate only becomes so if both involved are on the same wavelength and are both committed to the relationship. This is why it is important to ask yourself the right questions during the early stages of dating someone, and learn how to gauge how well you click with somebody.
