Choosing the perfect profile picture for you
It’s the eternal struggle: which photo do you pick for your dating profile? If you feel the pangs of anxiety at the thought of choosing one, don’t panic. On the contrary, it’s a rather good sign - it shows that you care!
Not everyone has a model body or chiseled features and it’s no big deal; a lack of these things doesn’t prevent you taking a beautiful photo that shows off your best side. Here are our top tips for overcoming the profile picture challenge, sure to help you catch the eye of someone special...
Pick a recent photo: Forget the snaps from 10 years ago! You might have been younger or prettier or slimmer, but it's not you! Be true to yourself, because if you have any hope of taking your love offline, you’ll need to have been honest about who you are and what you look like from the start. Choose a picture that’s less than 2 years old, or at least recent enough to represent you as you are today.
A photo where you are alone: Forget group photos, it just makes it difficult to know who you are; avoid using pictures with friends, family, children, or your ex (especially this!). A photo with your pet is nice, but not essential - you can always show this type of image in your photo gallery.
A photo where you are recognizable: Choose a photo that shows you clearly. A full body picture is fine, but only if you can still see your face properly - distant pictures have the problem of looking less honest. If you decide to take a selfie, take a few pictures to find the most natural looking pose and… smile! Be sure to look as friendly and approachable as possible.
A surrounding that suits you: Inside or outside, it's really not important, but keep in mind that the setting in which you’re photographed reveals something about you. Take a picture wherever you feel most comfortable; if this photo is going to define you, it should be you at your best.
Lights, Camera...: Lighting is very important in taking a great photo. No-one’s expecting a professional picture or that special studio lighting effect, but do choose a place with plenty of light (natural or artificial) that will help to show off your warmer side.
Uncluttered pictures: Avoid sunglasses, or anything that obscures your face at that - yes, too much make-up counts! Leave out pictures where you’re smoking or drinking, as these are found to be major turn-offs too. Your profile picture is your only shot at a first impression, so don’t blow it!
Use filters with caution: Heavily photoshopped pictures won’t help your cause, but adding a little more quality to your photo is no major crime these days. Using simple Instagram filters for example you can easily add colour filters that will give your photo more warmth or charm, and who doesn’t want that?
If you’re still unsure, ask a trusted friend who can help you choose a profile picture - often an objective eye can help you sort the good from the bad. The choice of your profile photo is paramount for completing the perfect profile and having a great online dating experience, especially for Attractive World!
